Anubis was painted black in Egyptian tomb art for reasons that had little to do with the coats of living animals. Black was the colour of the silt left by the Nile flood, the colour of returning life, and so it belonged to the god who kept watch over the dead.
The mask keeps that pairing. The face is matte black, with gold set into the tall upright ears and gold lines drawn along the brow, around the eyes and down the long muzzle. The ears stand well clear of the head, which is what gives the silhouette its height.
A striped hood comes with it, black and gold bands falling from the crown and over the shoulders in the shape of the old royal headcloth. The eye openings are cut wide and the muzzle ends above the chin, so the lower face stays visible and the two pieces read as one costume.
One size, suitable for most adults. It sits well with a full wolf costume, and there is more on the jackal headed god in our piece on Anubis the Egyptian god.
