Inversion is not always a fault

An umbrella that turns inside out in a strong gust and pops back is behaving correctly. That flex is what stops the ribs snapping. The failure to worry about is one that inverts and stays inverted, or that creases at a joint.

How it dries

The most common way an umbrella dies is not wind at all. It is being folded away wet, repeatedly, until the frame corrodes at the joints and the fabric develops mildew along the folds. Open it to dry before storing and the same umbrella lasts years longer.

Worth knowing that a printed canopy also makes an umbrella far easier to identify, which matters more than it sounds in an office lobby or a restaurant stand where a dozen plain black ones end up together.

Print visibility, and which designs work overhead

This is the consideration unique to a printed umbrella and it is easy to overlook.

From outside, the canopy is seen from above and at a distance, usually against grey sky. High contrast designs read clearly in that setting, while subtle tonal work disappears.

From underneath, which is the view the owner gets, the print is backlit by whatever daylight passes through the fabric. That changes the colours noticeably, and the designs that glow best from below are the ones with darker backgrounds and lighter subjects.

Umbrella size is the thing people underestimate, and it decides whether you arrive dry.

A canopy has to extend past your shoulders to keep rain off your back, and a small one leaves everything below your chest exposed as soon as there is any wind at all. If you carry a bag on your shoulder, the canopy needs to cover that too, or the bag gets wet while you stay dry.

The trade is portability. A large canopy does not fit inside a small bag, which means either carrying it in your hand or accepting a bag big enough to hold it.

If the umbrella will regularly be shared with somebody walking beside you, size up rather than assuming you will manage. Two people under a canopy sized for one is how umbrellas end up inverted and how shoulders end up soaked.

Keeping one alive longer than the usual season

Open it to dry rather than folding it wet. This single habit does more than everything else combined.

Do not force the mechanism if it sticks. A jammed slider usually means a rib has caught on the fabric, and forcing it is how ribs bend. Open it gently and free the catch by hand.

Rinse it occasionally if you live near the coast or use it in cities, since salt and road grime accumulate on a canopy and dull a print faster than rain alone does.
