Delivery timing is the other pressure. Shipping windows that are comfortable in July are tight in late October, and a costume that arrives on the first of November is worth nothing that year.

There is also a practical advantage to having it early. Trying a costume on a week ahead leaves time to exchange a size, work out what goes underneath and discover that the mask fogs your glasses, all of which are much better problems to have in advance.

Comfort across a long evening

The failure mode of a full costume is not appearance, it is heat.

These are furred outfits built to look convincing, which means they insulate well. In a heated house full of people, that becomes uncomfortable within an hour or two, and the most common outcome is a costume half removed by ten o'clock.

Plan for it. Dress light underneath even if the walk there is cold, take a coat rather than layering under the costume, and know where you can step outside if you need to.

For children this matters more, since they are less likely to say they are too hot and more likely to simply become miserable. A costume that can be partly removed is a considerable advantage at a long party.
