Wolf Wall Stickers

Wolf wall stickers solve a problem nothing else in our decor range can: they put a large design on a wall with no fixings, no holes and no permanence. For anyone renting, that is not a minor advantage, it is the difference between decorating and not decorating at all.

They also cover more wall for less money than framed art does, which makes them the sensible choice when the wall is large and the budget is not.

Which walls take them, and which will not

This is the thing to check before ordering, because surface decides everything.

Smooth painted plaster is ideal. Vinyl bonds cleanly, sits flat and comes away without damage. Painted wood, glass, tile, metal and sealed doors all work well for the same reason.

Textured surfaces are where it goes wrong. Woodchip, heavy artex, rough render and anything with a pronounced grain give the adhesive too little contact area, and the sticker will lift at the edges within days. No amount of pressing fixes this.

Freshly painted walls are the other trap. Paint continues curing for weeks after it looks dry, and a sticker applied too early will pull paint away when removed, or refuse to bond at all. Wait at least three or four weeks after painting.

Test an inconspicuous corner if you are unsure, particularly on older paint of unknown type.

Applying wolf wall stickers without bubbles

Almost every poor result comes from rushing this, and the whole job takes fifteen minutes done properly.

Clean the wall first with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry completely. Dust is the main reason adhesive fails, and a wall that looks clean rarely is.

Position before committing. Use low-tack masking tape to hold the sheet in place, step back, and look at it from where you normally sit or stand in the room. Placement always looks different from across a room than from arm's length at the wall.

Work from the centre outward. Peel back part of the backing, press the middle down first, then smooth toward the edges with a credit card or a squeegee wrapped in cloth. Pushing air out to the nearest edge is the whole technique.

If a bubble appears, prick it with a pin at the edge rather than the centre and press the air out through the hole. Trying to lift and reposition a bonded section usually stretches the vinyl.

Composition, placement and scale

The mistakes here are the same as with framed art, with one addition.

Scale up rather than down. A sticker is cheap enough that going large costs little, and a small decal on a large wall looks like an afterthought. These are at their best covering a substantial portion of a wall.

Work with the room's lines. A howling wolf silhouette reads best when there is empty wall above it for the howl to travel into, and placing it too close to a ceiling kills that effect entirely.

Multi-part designs need planning. Where a set includes a wolf and separate elements such as trees, birds or a moon, lay everything out on the floor first to settle the arrangement before anything touches the wall.

Which designs suit this format

Silhouettes are what vinyl does best, because a single flat colour cut to shape has no printing limitations to work around.

Rooms where these work best

Three settings account for most of what these are bought for.

Children's rooms come first, and for good reason. Taste changes fast at that age, and a decal that can be removed in ten minutes when a child moves on from wolves is a far better proposition than repainting or rehanging art.

Rented flats come second. Most tenancies prohibit holes in walls, which rules out framed art almost entirely. A decal is the only way to put something substantial on a rented wall and take it with you when you leave.

Awkward surfaces are the third and least obvious. Doors, wardrobe fronts, stairwell walls and the sloped ceilings of a loft room are all difficult to hang art on and perfectly suited to something that conforms to the surface instead.

Taking them off again

Removal is where the rental advantage is won or lost, and the technique matters.

Warm the vinyl first with a hairdryer on low, moving it constantly rather than holding it in one spot. Warm adhesive releases; cold adhesive tears and leaves residue.

Peel slowly at a shallow angle, close to the wall rather than straight out. Pulling outward is what lifts paint.

Any residue left behind comes away with a little soapy water or a dab of rubbing alcohol on a cloth.
