Blue and violet, kept in one family

A restrained palette does not have to mean a single accent colour. This one stays entirely on the cool side of the spectrum and lets the tones bleed into one another.

The face is built from blue and violet washed over each other, with white held back for the muzzle, the brow and the ruff so the features still read at a distance. Black appears only in the ears and the nose, and that small amount of it is what stops the whole thing floating off the skin.

Nothing competes, because every colour in it is a neighbour of the ones beside it. It is warm set against cool that turns a design this size into a blur, and there is none of that here.

Below the chin the wash breaks into drips, and a run of small moons hangs off the lower edge, which is where the portrait turns into something closer to a night sky.

At 5.3 by 9.5 cm there is very little room. A design pulling in every direction at this size goes muddy at arm's length; one that holds to a single family of colours keeps its shape.

Small and upright, so it suits a wrist, an inner forearm, an ankle, a collarbone or behind the ear.

Inner surfaces are usually paler than outer ones, which gives a cool colour better contrast to work against.
