The head is close to black where it counts, along the muzzle and the shadowed side of the face, and that dark ground is what holds the whole shape together.
Everything else is laid over the top of it. Purple and magenta run across the brow and the ears, red and orange catch in the fur down one side as though light were coming from behind the animal, and a cold blue collects under the jaw and along the chest.
White specks are scattered through the darker areas, which reads less like fur and more like a night sky seen through the outline of a wolf.
Every coloured design has to negotiate with the skin underneath it. Warm colours sit near it, cool colours fight it, and pale colours can vanish against a deeper tone.
A design built on a near black base sidesteps most of that. The dark carries the outline and the contrast, so the silhouette holds identically on everyone, and the brighter colours sit on that base rather than directly on the skin, which is what keeps them from washing out.
