White line on solid black behaves differently to black on white. At fine widths the pale marks appear to swell a little against the dark, an effect known as irradiation, so the detail reads as light rather than as drawing. That is why this rug looks almost lit from behind while using only two tones.
The composition is a ring. The wolf makes its top edge, stretched from tail to shoulder with one paw set down on a cratered moon and the head hanging clear at the right. Inside the circle sit a five-pointed star and a patch of hatched night sky. An ornamented crescent finishes the base, and leafy branches curl up both sides past a cluster of faceted crystals and a few small mushrooms.
The two sides of the wreath run close to mirror image. The animal along the top does not, and nor does the crystal cluster low on the left, and those two breaks are what keep the whole thing from reading as a stamp. Drawing round a centre in this way turns up everywhere from tile work to compass roses. It organises a great many small elements so they still make one clear shape from across the room.
