Interlace is the oldest trick in Celtic ornament: one ribbon crossing over and under itself until the eye gives up looking for the end of it. The wolf on this oval plaque is drawn the same way, its ear, muzzle and ruff built from bands that fold back into each other in white line on a deep black ground.
One wolf, shown in profile and facing along the wrist. The knotwork runs through the cheek and jaw rather than sitting on top of them, so the animal and the pattern turn out to be the same drawing. The plaque is glossy black and takes a bright highlight along its upper edge, which pushes the white lines forward.
The band is brown leather, a flat strap with a braided strand running alongside it, and the cut edge shows a lighter tan underneath. Dark brown cord binds the plaque in place, wrapped and knotted at both ends, then carries on past the band to a sliding tie at the back with small knotted ends, so the fit is set by hand.
Leather is happiest dry. Wipe it with a soft cloth and let it air if it is caught in the rain.
It sits with the rest of the leather wolf bracelets, and the wider wolf bracelet range stands alongside it. If you are weighing up designs, this guide to choosing a wolf jewel is a good place to start.
