The wolf here is assembled out of coloured fragments rather than illustrated: a single head seen straight on, in reds, oranges, yellows and greens against black. Enough of them to be unmistakably an animal, few enough that you can see the construction.
Mosaic is one of the oldest decorative techniques there is, and it has always worked on the same principle: stand close and you see pieces, stand back and you see a picture. On a bag panel that means it rewards a second look in a way a photographic print does not.
Photographic wildlife prints tie themselves to the moment they were made. Geometric and mosaic treatments do not, because they were never trying to look real in the first place.
Ten years on, the tiled wolf still looks deliberate while the realistic one looks like a phone wallpaper from 2015.
The practical benefit of a bright print. The bag is black and the colour is concentrated on the front panel, which is the part that gets picked out in a cloakroom, an office or an airport carousel full of plain black rectangles.
