Predator and prey, accurately

Putting these two in one design is not arbitrary. Deer are the main prey of wolves across most of their range, and the two species have shaped each other for a very long time.

What wolves mainly take is the slow, the sick and the old, because those are the animals a hunt can actually catch. Most hunts fail. That pressure keeps a deer population healthier than an unhunted one, which is the genuinely interesting part.

You have probably seen the version where reintroduced wolves changed the course of rivers. It is a lovely piece of film and it overstates the case considerably.

What is well supported is that wolves reduced elk numbers and changed where elk were willing to graze. What is disputed is how much of the vegetation and river change followed from that, rather than from drought, bears, hunting by people and a dozen other factors running at the same time.

Ecologists are still arguing. The wolves mattered; they were not the only thing that mattered.
