Bold work scales, fine work does not

The larger a design gets, the more the drawing underneath it has to carry, and the two styles behave completely differently.

Fine detail rewards close viewing and effectively disappears beyond a couple of metres. Heavy linework does the opposite: it is built from shapes rather than texture, so it reads from across a room and gains presence as it gets bigger.

At 15 x 21 cm this is squarely in bold territory, and the design is drawn for it rather than being a small piece enlarged.

The most direct thing in the range

The wolf is snarling, head turned to the left, lip drawn back off the teeth and the ears flat, worked in black ink hatching. Behind it sits a loose watercolour wash, teal across the top and magenta down through the bottom, with the bled edges left showing. It is the design for someone who wants the wolf at full strength rather than as an atmosphere.

Where it goes

A large piece wants a flat area with space around it: an upper back, an outer thigh, a chest or a shoulder blade.

A useful trick before deciding: cut a piece of paper to 15 by 21 cm and hold it against the spot in a mirror. Designs consistently look smaller on a body than on a screen, because a screen shows them isolated and flat.
