Japan had a wolf of its own. The okami ranged over Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, the smallest of all known wolves, and the last confirmed animal was recorded in Nara Prefecture in 1905. Mountain shrines such as Mitsumine in Chichibu still keep its image as a guardian of the forest and of the fields below.
This pendant catches the wolf seated, haunches down, head tipped back and muzzle raised. The whole animal is cut through in bright steel, so the shape is carried by its edges alone: triangles across the chest, a fan of facets over the shoulder, a wedge for the tail folded at the base. Hold it up and the background shows through every opening.
A short chain links the wolf to a wide split ring, and the chain gives it room to swing.
