Kabuki Wolf Mask

A face built for the stage

Stage make-up in kabuki is called kumadori, a set of bold lines laid over a pale ground so that a face still reads from the back of a large theatre. Colour carries meaning in it, red for heroism and heat, blue and black for the cold and the supernatural.

This wolf does the same work in relief instead of paint. Scrolls and curls are raised across the cheeks and across the plates that flare out at either side of the head, a small disc and crescent sit at the centre of the brow, and an aged brass colouring rides the raised edges while the recesses stay dark.

The eyes are the loudest part of it. Each opening is outlined in bright pink, the one flash of colour on a metallic looking face, and the effect holds at a distance in the way a stage face has to.
