A portrait built almost entirely from darks

Painters call this a low key picture: most of the values sit in the bottom half of the scale, and only a few marks are allowed to be light. The background here is near black with a green cast, the coat runs through cold brown and dusky rose, and the light is spent on three things only. The white blaze down the muzzle, the pale fur ringing the eyes, and the amber of the eyes themselves.

Brush marks left visible

The fur is laid in with broad strokes rather than drawn hair by hair, and those strokes break apart at the edge of the head, so the wolf dissolves into the dark instead of sitting on top of it. On the cheek you can still see where one stroke crossed another.

Deep grounds ask a lot of a print. 3D high definition printing keeps the near blacks separated, so the green in the background stays distinct from the brown of the coat rather than flattening into one mass, and the amber eyes hold their heat. The image runs to all four edges.
