Every part of this wolf is decoration. The face is assembled from paisley curls, fine hatching and rows of dots in slate blue, grey and warm copper brown, so brow, muzzle and ruff appear only where the pattern changes direction. A round teal stone sits at the centre of the forehead, and a second hangs from a scrolled collar under the chin. The ground behind stays white, which keeps all that detail legible from across a room.
The paisley shape running through this drawing arrived in Britain by a roundabout route. It was woven into Kashmir shawls long before the mills of Paisley, a town west of Glasgow, began copying it in the nineteenth century and gave the motif its English name. Set into a wolf's face, those curls turn a portrait into something closer to ceremonial work.
