The word is Sanskrit for circle, and in Hindu and Buddhist practice a mandala is a ritual diagram rather than a decoration: a symmetrical map of a cosmos, built outward from a centre.
The most famous form is made from coloured sand. Monks work on one for days or weeks, placing grains through a metal funnel with enormous precision.
Then they destroy it. The finished mandala is swept up, the sand collected and poured into running water, and nothing is kept.
The destruction is the point. The object was never meant to last, and the practice is about that as much as about the making.
Of all the designs in this range, this is the one whose tradition is genuinely on the side of impermanence. A mandala that disappears is behaving correctly.
The pattern is not a free standing circle here. It is a wolf's head seen front on and split down the middle: one half drawn as fur, shaded and whiskered, with a pale eye; the other half the same head rebuilt as mandala work, petals and dotted scrollwork filling the ear and cheek, a flower opening at the base of the ear. Black and grey throughout.
That vertical join is the line to work to. Set the head square on the limb so the two halves sit level and leave clear space either side; tilted against a sleeve line or a strap it reads as an accident.
