In a quartz movement, a sliver of crystal is made to vibrate 32,768 times every second. The number is chosen, not arbitrary. It is two to the fifteenth power, so a small circuit can halve it fifteen times over and land on exactly one pulse a second. That pulse is what moves the hands.
The lid carries a stylised animal head in raised profile, built from broad flat shapes with one long ear swept back and the muzzle pushed forward. A beaded border follows the rim. The bow above is open scrollwork, with a fluted crown resting on a rosette collar. The warm tone of the finish runs across the whole face.
The case is stainless steel, and a chain runs from the loop at the top of the frame. The cover is domed, which gives the relief room to stand up off the surface, and the beaded rim carries the eye around it.
