It is not a mineral and not a crystal. It is volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too fast for any crystal structure to develop, which is why it has that depthless black surface rather than the grain of a stone.
Because there is no structure, it does not break along planes. It fractures in smooth curved shells, and the edge that leaves is finer than anything that can be ground onto steel.
Obsidian blades have been measured at a few molecules wide at the edge, and some surgeons have used them for exactly that reason. A rock people were knapping into tools before recorded history still outperforms a scalpel on that one measure.
Volcanic, older than anyone, and genuinely dangerous in its unworked form. It carries more than most polished black stones do.
Here it is carved into a wolf's head in profile, jaws open and ears laid back, hung from a strand of black beads that changes as it goes: round beads, faceted barrels and rough chipped pieces, with no other colour anywhere on the piece.
Glass, so treat it as glass. It will chip if knocked against something harder, particularly at an edge. Store it separately from metal jewellery, take it off before anything physical, and clean it with warm water and a soft cloth.
Our jewellery guide covers the rest. See the wolf jewelry range.
