In the oldest European accounts the change was worn rather than suffered. Wolf belts, borrowed skins, a pelt pulled over the shoulders: the animal arrived as a garment and a man stepped into it. This mask belongs to that older idea. It is built as a whole head, ginger from crown to chin, with a mane of long copper hair falling down the back and gathering into a beard along the jaw.
The sculpt holds the snarl at full stretch. The jaws are open wide on pink and red gums, a dark tongue and a double row of uneven pointed teeth, the front fangs longest of all. Above them the brow is furrowed and the muzzle creased around a broad black nose. The eyes are gold with dark slit pupils and a rim of red. Both ears stand tall and taper to a point, one tipped forward as though it has just caught a sound.
The word werewolf comes from Old English: wer, meaning man, set against wolf. Man-wolf. The trouble in every telling sits at the seam between the two halves, which is precisely where a mask earns its keep. Cover the whole head and the seam has nowhere to show. More on where the werewolf came from.
