A track is a record of an absence

It is usually sold as a symbol of moving forward, and there is something better in it than that.

A footprint is the only common tattoo subject that is not a picture of a thing. It is a picture of where a thing was. Every track anyone has ever found was made by an animal that is no longer standing there, and the whole discipline of tracking is reading the past from what it left behind.

That makes it a quieter and more interesting design than the forward-motion reading suggests. It can be about arrival, or about something that has gone, depending on which end of the trail you are standing at.

Buy two and make a trail

The obvious use of a small print design, and almost nobody does it.

Two or three of the same design, spaced along a forearm, up a calf or across a shoulder, read as a track crossing the body rather than as repeated stickers. Vary the spacing slightly and set them at a shallow angle rather than in a straight line, which is how real tracks actually fall.

It is the cheapest way to get something that looks like a large custom piece.
