Taller than it is wide

Almost every body placement people think of first is upright, and this design agrees with them. That is the main thing to plan around.

An upright design needs an upright surface: the outside of a forearm, a calf, an outer thigh, the upper arm, or alongside the spine. Those are the places long enough to take 21 cm along its long side.

Laid across a shoulder or the ribs it fights the body, and pines that should stand upright end up leaning.

Why it wants to be tall

Because the trees set the format. Spruce run straight up on both sides, the wolf's face sits at the centre of them looking directly out, and the eye travels down the trunks to the face and back up again.

Compressed into a wide shallow shape, the same image becomes a wolf with some trees behind it, which is a considerably duller thing.

It is worked in grey and black with no colour, the forest fading out at the edges rather than stopping at a border.

Forest is real wolf country

Worth saying, since the imagery usually favours open snow. Woodland is genuine wolf habitat, and the European populations that returned in recent decades came back through forest corridors.
