Grandmother rides in the open jaws with her spectacles drawn on, her grey bun neat and her green and white dress spread over long pale legs. One soft tableau holds the whole tale.
The wolf beneath her is dressed like a countryman in a red and white gingham shirt, teal trousers and heavy black boots. His muzzle is grey brown, a row of white teeth lines the open jaw, and a small pink patch marks one cheek. A cord loop sits at the crown of his head.
Charles Perrault printed the tale in Paris in 1697 and ended it badly for the girl. The Brothers Grimm collected it again in 1812 and brought in the huntsman who cuts the grandmother free. Older than both are the spoken versions carried around French and Italian firesides, where the wolf was sometimes a werewolf and the girl talked her own way out.
This plush sits at the comic end of that line. The swallowing is the joke rather than the ending, and grandmother looks entirely unbothered about it.
More storytelling characters wait in the wolf plush toy collection, and the blog looks at the wolf plush as a favourite hero of children.
