Most of our backpacks carry a wolf and leave it there. This one dresses the wolf as a chief, which is a harder thing to print well and a more striking thing to wear.
The head sits square to the viewer against a dull green ground: ochre red paint across the brow and around the amber eyes, a paw print marked in yellow on the forehead, banded feathers and beadwork hanging either side of the face, a bone choker below the muzzle. Faces are what human vision handles best, and the paint takes the eye straight to this one. It reads immediately from across a room.
Worth understanding rather than assuming. Feathers like these were earned rather than simply worn: individual feathers marked specific acts, and among the Plains nations an assembly of them was granted by a community over years.
Popular imagery flattened that into a costume applied to every Indigenous person on the continent. This is a romantic composition in that tradition rather than a record of anything, and the real traditions are considerably more interesting.
