What the headdress is

Worth understanding rather than assuming. The feathered war bonnet belongs to a small number of Plains nations, and within those it was earned rather than simply worn: individual feathers marked specific acts, and the assembly was granted by a community over years.

Popular imagery flattened that into a costume applied to every Indigenous person on the continent. This is a romantic composition in that tradition rather than a record of anything, and the real traditions are considerably more interesting.
