The knot of interlocking triangles set above the wolf on this plate is the Valknut, and it is one of the few symbols genuinely attested from the Viking age rather than borrowed from later folk magic.
It turns up on carved stones and in ship burials from the period, usually in the company of Odin and of the dead. What it actually meant is not recorded anywhere, and every confident modern reading of it is a guess made long after the fact.
Most wolf pendants stop at the head. Here the animal is shown in full, in profile and mid-stride, with the head turned out toward the viewer.
That is closer to how Norse craftsmen actually treated animals. A body worked into the shape it had to fill, moving across the panel rather than staring out of it.
The background is a fine dotted texture, darkened, while the wolf, the Valknut and the framing bands stand bright and raised above it. That contrast is the whole reason the design reads at arm's length instead of flattening into a shiny blur.
