Old school was engineering, not taste

Traditional tattoo style is instantly recognisable: heavy black outlines, a small palette, simple shapes, no subtle shading. People treat it as a look. It began as a set of solutions.

Ink spreads under skin over decades. A fine line becomes a fuzzy one, and delicate shading turns to grey mush. The old artists knew it, because they could see thirty-year-old work walking around on sailors.

So they drew heavy outlines that could afford to blur, used colours that held up, and kept shapes bold enough to survive being softened. A traditional piece is designed to still be readable when its owner is seventy.

Which is why it never dates

Realistic portrait work photographs beautifully on day one and is the first thing to look tired. Old school looked deliberately crude in 1950 and looks exactly as intended now.

If you are testing a style before committing to permanent ink, this is the one with the best long-term record.

The tattoo

A snarling wolf head in grey, turned to the left with the teeth showing, and a chrome stage microphone standing in front of it. Roses sit beside the head, a banner of musical notes runs along the bottom, and curling smoke fills the background. The blue is confined to the eyes and to the flame-shaped markings across the brow and cheeks, which is what makes them read first.

It is a large piece, and the biggest design in our tattoo range by some distance.
