The werewolf is usually filed with vampires and other invented monsters, which misses something uncomfortable: people were prosecuted for it.
Across France, Germany and Switzerland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, werewolf trials ran alongside the witch trials, using the same procedures and reaching the same kind of end. The accused were generally poor, often outsiders, and confessions were extracted the way confessions were extracted then.
Whatever those people actually were, they were not wolves.
It explains why the myth outlasted almost every other European monster. A werewolf is not a threat from outside the village. It is a neighbour, and the horror is that the thing was inside a person the whole time and nobody could see it.
That is a fear with no expiry date, which is why the story keeps being retold while most of its contemporaries have gone.
