White Wolf Blanket Sunrise

Sunrise does most of the work in this design. A cream coloured wolf sits with its back to you on a low rock, tail curled at its side, watching the light break between a range of misty peaks. The whole cloth is washed in gold, amber and yellow green, and the sun itself holds the centre of the picture, low behind the mountains.

Painted from behind

Placing the animal with its back to the viewer is an old device in landscape painting. You are put at its shoulder rather than in front of it, looking where it looks, which is why the peaks and the light read as the subject here as much as the wolf does. The gold in the sky and the yellow green in the slopes are close neighbours on the colour wheel, and that kinship is what keeps a picture this bright from turning noisy.

White coats in the wild

Pale wolves are rarely albino. Arctic wolves wear white the year round, and among grey wolves a cream or near white coat is simply one of the colours the species already carries, alongside grey, tawny and black. Flexible and resistant microfibre takes the 3D high definition print, which is what holds the graded light in the sky rather than banding it. Four sizes are available: 75 x 100 cm, 130 x 150 cm, 150 x 200 cm and 228 x 228 cm. Cold wash for better durability.
