Put two creatures in one small design and they compete. The design works only if one of them is clearly the main event and the other supports it.

Here the wolf is the subject and the goldfish is the accent. You can tell by size and by contrast: the wolf carries the weight, and the fish provides a point of colour and movement that stops the composition sitting still.

Designs that get this wrong give both elements equal billing, and the eye bounces between them without settling. That is why a lot of busy tattoo designs feel restless without anyone being able to say why.

Look at a design and ask what you see first. If the answer is not obvious within a second, it will not become obvious on your arm either.

The pairing

Wolf and fish is an odd combination and that is rather the point. The goldfish carries associations of luck and prosperity in East Asian tradition; the wolf carries almost the opposite register. Together they read as deliberate rather than decorative.
