The composition stacks three things one above the other. A full moon sits at the top right, a stand of narrow pines rises beneath it, and a spray of open roses with heavy leaves fills the lower two thirds.
On a rock ledge at the edge of the trees stands a single small wolf, head raised, howling towards the moon. It is the smallest element in the design and the one that names it.
The roses are built from fine outline and dense pencil shading, the pines from short hatched strokes, and the moon from mottled grey. No colour anywhere in it.
Black and grey has one practical advantage on skin. It is darker than any complexion, so the contrast holds regardless of the ground underneath, while the cool pale colours are the ones that struggle and lose legibility quickly on deeper skin.
10.5 x 19.8 cm, tall and narrow, so it belongs on a long vertical part of the body: the outside of a forearm, a calf, an outer thigh, or alongside the spine.
