Colour is rare on skin

Most tattoo work, permanent and temporary, is black or close to it. There is a reason, and it makes a full-colour design more striking than people realise.

Skin is not a neutral background. It has its own warmth, and every colour laid on it has to negotiate with that. Black never has to: it is darker than any skin, so the contrast holds regardless.

Colour has to be chosen to work with the ground rather than against it, which is why a design that pulls it off reads as deliberate rather than decorative.

Daylight is where it lives

Multicoloured work looks its best outdoors and in daylight, where the full range separates. Warm indoor bulbs flatten it and push everything toward amber.
