A blue eye worn as a protective charm is one of the most persistent objects in the world. It runs across Turkey, Greece, the Levant, North Africa and far beyond, in more or less the same form for thousands of years.
It works on an old and rather elegant logic. The belief is that envy can do harm through a look, so the charm is an eye that looks back: it meets the gaze and returns it before it can land on you.
The colour is thought to matter because in the regions where the tradition is strongest, blue eyes are uncommon, and unusual eyes were the ones suspected of carrying the look in the first place. The remedy is made from the same material as the threat.
It suits the animal better than most charms would. A wolf watches, holds a gaze and is famously difficult to sneak up on, which is exactly the quality the amulet is asking for.
The charm is a single round stone set into the wolf's brow, above and between its own eyes rather than replacing them. The stone is turquoise blue with a narrow vertical slit for a pupil, and it is the only colour on the piece: the head itself, the standing ears and the engraved ruff are all antiqued silver tone, and the wolf's own two eyes are plain metal.
Worth knowing that blue-eyed adult wolves are rare in life. Pups are born blue and it fades to amber within months.
