Wolf, raised head, full moon behind. It appears on more skin, more walls and more posters than any other wolf composition, and it has for a century.
The reason is geometry rather than nature. A bright disc behind a dark silhouette is one of the strongest arrangements available to any artist, which is why every culture with a sun or a moon in its art arrived at it independently, without conferring.
It is also the composition that survives being seen from a distance and in poor light, because it is built from two shapes at maximum contrast rather than from fine detail.
Worth knowing, and it does not spoil the picture. Wolves do not howl at it. They raise the muzzle because that sends sound outward rather than into the ground, in the way a person cups their hands to shout across a valley.
They howl at night because they are active at night, and a full moon is simply the night people were outside to hear it. The connection is ours rather than theirs.
21 x 15 cm, wider than it is tall, so it wants a broad flat surface: the upper back across the shoulder blades, a chest, or the front of a thigh.
Our article on why wolves howl covers the acoustics. See the wolf temporary tattoo range.
