Heraldry has a word for a beast shown as head and shoulders alone, its lower edge left ragged rather than cut clean: erased. This wolf is stitched exactly that way. The ruff breaks into loose points at the chest, so the outline finishes in fur instead of a straight line.
The colouring is naturalistic rather than graphic. Charcoal runs down the bridge of the muzzle and across the brow. Silver and near white fill the cheeks and the deep throat ruff. Stitch direction follows the lie of the coat, outward from the nose, downward from the ears, spilling from the chest.
Two gold eyes and a black nose are the only fixed points in all that texture, and they are what the eye finds first from across a room. That is the case for a head rather than a whole animal on a badge. At this size a full figure gives its legs and tail up to texture, while a head keeps the two features that carry at distance.
Embroidered by hand, cut to the shape of the wolf and finished with a pale grey edge.
