Most tattoo designs are a single thing: a head, an animal, a symbol. This one carries a place inside it as well, and that is a different kind of image.
A wolf's face fills the upper half in watercolour rust, amber and cream, with a swirl of nebula across the brow and a black diamond drawn around the whole composition. Below the muzzle, inside that diamond, bare trees stand over a small black wolf howling in silhouette from a bank of grass.
So there are two pictures stacked one on the other, and the eye travels down between them rather than landing in a single place. That is what the upright format is for.
The face looks straight out, but the mouth is closed and the expression is level rather than fierce. Nothing is snarling, and no statement is being made about the wearer.
