The right size to layer

Layered chains only work when one piece leads and the others support it. Two statement pendants at once look like indecision.

This is the one that leads. A crescent moon studded with raised stars curls around a wolf's head in deep relief, jaws open mid howl, with a sun wheel set at the foot of the crescent, so anything worn alongside it needs to stay quiet.

How to actually do it

Three rules and they are not complicated.

• Leave real space between chains. If they sit too close they tangle and end up stacked on top of each other.
• Only one pendant should be large. Here that question is already settled, so keep the other strands plain or empty.
• Keep the metal tone consistent. Mixed silver and gold can be done deliberately, but it needs to look like a decision rather than an oversight.

Weight and the chain

Weight is what tests a necklace, and the bail is where they almost always fail. A pendant with this much metal in it belongs on a substantial woven chain rather than a fine one. Heavy pendants on fine chains are the reason people lose jewellery.
