Forest is the real habitat

Wolf imagery runs overwhelmingly to open snow, and it gives a misleading picture of where the animal actually lives.

Woodland is genuine wolf country. The European populations that returned over the last few decades came back through forest corridors rather than open ground, moving at night through country nobody thought could still hold them, and turning up in places that had not seen a wolf in a century.

Trees are where wolves are, and where they were hardest to find.

A scene rather than a subject

The design shows two wolves among trees rather than a single animal, which is the more difficult composition and the more interesting one. One is white with its eyes closed, the other dark grey and lowering its muzzle towards it, the two faces almost touching, and at the foot of the picture a third wolf howls in silhouette between the trunks.

The trees give structure and vertical rhythm, and the blue light behind them carries the depth, so the pair read as being somewhere rather than floating on skin.

At 13.8 x 18.8 cm there is room for that depth. Smaller designs have to choose between the animal and the setting.

The tattoo

A substantial upright piece, so it wants a flat area with room: an upper back, an outer thigh, a chest.
