Engraving style is tone faked with lines

The look here comes from old printed illustration, and it exists because early printing could not do grey.

A press puts down ink or it does not. There is no halfway. So engravers built the illusion of shading out of pure line: hatching, cross-hatching, dots and swelling strokes, spaced so that at reading distance the eye blends them into continuous tone.

Every scientific illustration, banknote and old book plate you have seen works this way. It is a workaround that outlived the limitation by two centuries because it simply looks good.

Why it suits a tattoo

Because skin is a difficult surface for soft shading. Gradients wash out against skin tone and lose definition at a distance.

Line does not. Hatching keeps its contrast, holds up at small size, and reads clearly from across a room, which is why old-school tattooing and old-school engraving arrived at such similar solutions.
