How to do it so it works

Three rules, and they are the same ones tattooists use.

• Leave breathing space. Designs that touch look like a mistake; a clear gap of bare skin between them looks intended.
• Follow the limb. Arrange them along the direction of the arm or leg rather than scattered across it, so the eye travels one way.
• Vary the size. Two pieces of identical size sit awkwardly, like a pair. One larger with a smaller companion reads as composed.

A floral piece is the ideal companion element, because the soft outline blends into bare skin rather than stopping at a hard edge.
