Interior Alaska raises wolves in every shade at once. Black, charcoal, ash, cream and near white coats can appear in one litter, and this design takes the single outline all of them share.

One animal lies with its forelegs stretched forward and its head lifted towards you, settled on a thin suggested ground line. The whole design is one colour, black, and the fur is described entirely by the shape of the cut: long tapering strokes down the ruff, shoulder and haunch, finer filaments where the tail feathers out and where the paws come to rest.

The face carries more detail than a silhouette usually allows. You can pick out the mask around the eyes, the set of the ears and the lighter break across the muzzle where the wall shows through.

Why Alaskan coats differ so widely

Coat colour in North American wolves owes a great deal to a single gene variant that arrived with early domestic dogs and spread inland. Wolves of the forested interior inherited it most often, which is why dark and mixed coats are common there while the far northern tundra stays pale. There is more on the species in the grey wolf.
