A bald eagle fills the left of this rug in close portrait, white head and hooked orange beak open in a scream. A second eagle sweeps in low from the right with its wings fully spread. Between them hangs a dreamcatcher hoop holding two pale buffalo, with a fan of striped feathers and beadwork trailing beneath. Down in the corner a small grey and cream wolf, seen from behind, tips its head back to howl, and a painted hide drum rests at the far edge. All of it sits against a peach and cream sky over misty grey mountains.
The grouping has roots. Wolves shadowed bison herds across the North American plains for thousands of years, working the edges of a herd rather than the centre. Eagles covered the same ground from above and came down to what the pack left behind. Put an eagle, a bison and a wolf in one picture and you have drawn a chain that ran unbroken until the nineteenth century emptied the plains of buffalo.
The printing holds the small things: the separate barbs on the hanging feathers, the dark curved horn on the nearer buffalo, the shaggy gold of both coats.
