Lupus, the wolf, is a genuine constellation. It sits in the southern sky between Centaurus and Scorpius, and the Greeks first drew it as a nameless wild animal held by the centaur. The wolf arrived later, through Latin and Arabic translators who finally gave the beast a name.
In the spring of 1006 a supernova flared inside Lupus and became the brightest stellar event in recorded history. Observers in Egypt, China, Japan and a monastery in Switzerland all wrote it down, and some accounts say the ground was lit well enough to read by. The wolf is painted rather than sketched, a near black head facing straight out of the circle with blue light running along the muzzle, the brow and the inner ears, and pale gold eyes holding the middle. A fine white web is drawn behind the head like the netting of a hoop, orange and gold cloud burns behind that, and a row of moon phases curves below the chin to a full moon at the foot of the design. It reads as a symbol from across the sand and as fine detail up close.
