The dreamcatcher printed around this wolf is Ojibwe in origin. In Anishinaabemowin the word is asabikeshiinh, meaning spider, and the early ones were small willow hoops laced with nettle fibre and hung above a cradleboard. The story belongs to Asibikaashi, the Spider Woman, who watched over the children of the nation until it spread too far for her to reach every cradle, and the women of each family began tying hoops in her place.
The first hoops were made of green willow, which dries and pulls oval, so the charm was expected to come apart at about the time the child grew past needing it.
A spider's orb web is spun from two kinds of silk, a dry frame laid first and a sticky spiral laid over it, and the spider walks the dry lines to keep from catching itself. The netting inside a hoop follows the same logic, worked from the rim inwards to a small open centre. Set around a wolf's face, it gives the eye a circle to travel before it settles. Here the hoop is bound in red, ochre and turquoise with the wolf painted from life inside it, long feathers and three smaller hoops hanging beneath, a horned bison skull banked with feathers on either side, and bands of geometric pattern across the top and foot of a cream damask ground.
