Grey wolves have faces made to be looked at. A pale iris sits inside a dark rim, with lighter fur around the eye and along the brow, and among the wild dogs of the world that combination makes the wolf one of the easiest to read at a distance. You can tell where it is looking from across a clearing. The artwork trades on that directly. The face is painted head on and cropped to fill the whole circle, worked over in swirling pattern, rust and copper across the brow, deep blue and white through the cheeks and jaw, with rows of small pale dots running down the muzzle and coppery eyes set wide under a dark brow.
Inside a pack, a steady look does real work. Wolves follow one another's eyes, turning to see what a packmate has noticed, and a held glance between two adults can settle a small question without a sound.
