Black across the back and shoulders, with a warm brown wash blended through the flank and belly, this standing wolf is painted the way a dark coated wolf really looks in daylight. The head is turned towards the viewer, amber eyes catching the light against the near black mask of the muzzle.
The figure stands four square, legs braced and tail hanging low, in the settled posture of an animal that has stopped to look rather than one caught mid stride. Fine hair strokes run the full length of the body, thickening into a ruff at the neck and softening down the legs to the pale toes. The finish is matte throughout, so the coat catches a lamp the way fur does rather than throwing back a shine. It measures 20 x 6 x 13.5 cm, and holds a shelf on its own.
The black wolf of the American south east was once classed as a subspecies of the red wolf and known as the Florida red wolf. It lived in family groups rather than large packs, and hunting and the loss of its habitat drove it to extinction in 1921. What survives of it now is the look: the dark coat, the steady stare, the build of a working predator.
Suitable for ages 3 years and older. Not suitable for children under 3 years.
It sits at the larger end of our wolf figurines range, and if the colouring is what drew you in, our piece on the black wolf explains where a coat like that comes from.
