Plaited borders drawn around an animal's head are an old arrangement in northern ornament, the endless band on the outside and the creature that has to be faced at the middle. This buckle keeps to that pattern. A braided rope runs the full circuit of the outer edge, studded at intervals, and inside it the surface breaks into curling scrolls that sweep down to a point at the base.
At the centre is the wolf, a head and shoulders in raised relief: ears pricked and turned, brow furrowed, muzzle drawn back off the teeth. The colouring is a weathered grey, dark in the hollows and bright along the raised lines, so the modelling reads clearly at arm's length and closer up as well.
Everything else is black. The strap runs dark from end to end with a close, even ribbing across it, which leaves the buckle as the single bright point of the whole piece and lets that snarling head do all the talking.
