Black wolves owe their colour to a single gene variant at the K locus, and that variant did not begin with wolves. It came from domestic dogs, carried across the Bering land bridge by early people and passed into North American wolf populations thousands of years ago. It appears to favour wolves living in forest, which is why black is common in the wooded ranges of Yellowstone and effectively unknown among wolves in Europe.
The design is a black wolf head seen face on. Heraldry has a word for that pose, caboshed: no neck, no body, just the face held level with the viewer. It is one of the oldest ways to put an animal on a shield, and it survives because the eyes carry the whole thing.
Thick and warm, organic cotton on the inside, polyester outside, with a reinforced exterior zip. Machine washable at 30 degrees. These jackets are cut small, so order the size above your usual one and it will hang properly. Full measurements are on the apparel size chart, more pieces sit in wolf clothes, and there is a longer portrait of the black wolf on the blog.
