Almost every element on this rug answers to a single ring. The wolf forms the top of it, body stretched long from tail to shoulder, one paw reaching down to rest on a full moon that has been given proper craters and shadow. The head hangs clear at the right of the circle, muzzle turned down. A five-pointed star opens out inside the ring, an ornamented crescent closes it at the foot, and wreaths of leaves climb both sides with mushrooms and faceted crystals tucked into the lower curve.
The animal is drawn in white, with the head and legs worked up in fine grey shading so they hold their weight against all that pattern.
The star repays a second look. Drawn in one unbroken stroke, its five lines cut each other at points that split every segment in the same proportion, about one to 1.618. That makes it one of the best balanced figures you can build from five straight lines, and the balance is what steadies a design this busy.
Behind everything runs a painted galaxy, teal along one edge turning through violet and near black at the other, dusted with stars. It is the only colour in the piece and it does the work of a frame.
