Where the blue comes from

Snow in shadow is never white. It reflects whatever sits above it, so on a clear winter day the hollows and the paw prints fill with a cold, saturated blue while the open surface stays bright. Anyone who has crossed a frozen field late in the afternoon has seen it happen.

That is the blue this jacket is printed in. The wolf and the patterning around it sit in the same range as winter shade, which is why the design looks settled outdoors rather than pasted on.

A pattern built for low light

Our eyes change behaviour at dusk. As the light falls we shift from cone vision to rod vision, and rods are more sensitive to short wavelengths, so blues hold their brightness while reds sink into the dark. Scale helps as well. Close up you read texture and brushwork; at a few paces the wolf resolves. Grey wolves do something similar with banded guard hairs that break their outline at distance, and there is more on the animal in the gray wolf.
