The Irish word for wolf is mac tire, son of the land. There is no menace in it, only belonging, and it is a fair clue to how the animal was regarded in Ireland long before the last of them were hunted out in the eighteenth century.
The wolf faces left, jaws parted, ears up and forward, and the fur is drawn as fine dark lines fanning back from the muzzle across the cheek and down the neck. That line work is what keeps the shape readable at key ring size. The head hangs on a short chain from a wide split ring, the whole piece in a silver tone.
Irish tradition kept them close. Cormac mac Airt, the legendary high king, was said to have been reared by a she wolf in a cave, a story with obvious cousins in Rome and elsewhere. Placenames across Ireland and Scotland still carry the animal. Over the North Sea the Norse were doing something similar, giving Odin two wolves, Geri and Freki, and having him feed them from his own table while he lived on wine.
