Wolf Comforter Cover Dream Catcher

A beaded hoop frames a winter valley on this set, and inside it a pack moves through the snow: wolves picking their way over blue drifts while another silhouette stands against a moonlit sky. The rim is strung with turquoise and clay coloured beads, and long black and white feathers fall away from it, weighted with small arrowhead charms and a wrapped stone hanging at the centre.

The hoop that came from the Ojibwe

The dreamcatcher belongs first to the Ojibwe, who call it asabikeshiinh, the spider. Spider Woman spun her webs above the cradleboards of sleeping children, and when the people had spread too far for her to reach every baby, the grandmothers wove hoops in her place. Through the twentieth century the form travelled to many other nations, which is why it is now read as a shared symbol.

Setting wolves inside that hoop follows an older idea again. In a good many Native traditions the wolf is a relative rather than a beast to be conquered: a teacher of hunting, of loyalty, of how a family holds together over hard ground. The soft cream ground of the print keeps the whole scene warm.
